Adiona Alert Goes Down Under

If you've spent any time outside cell range in the last few years, backcountry hiking, sailing offshore, overlanding through places where the nearest tower is a rumour, you've probably relied on a small, tough, dedicated gadget clipped to your pack or mounted on your dash. A Garmin inReach. A ZOLEO. A Bivy Stick. These devices have quietly become as standard as a first aid kit for serious backcountry travellers.

At the same time, a very different kind of satellite technology has been creeping into the headlines: phones that can text, and soon, call, directly from a satellite, with no extra hardware at all. T-Mobile customers have had this for over a year now. Rogers customers in Canada have it too, and a growing list of carriers worldwide are rolling it out.

These two worlds, dedicated satellite communicators and "direct-to-cell" phone service, are often talked about as if one is about to replace the other. It isn't that simple. They're solving overlapping but genuinely different problems, and it's worth understanding exactly how before you decide your phone alone is enough backup for the backcountry.

## The Iridium World — Purpose-Built, Pole-to-Pole

Devices like the Garmin inReach, ZOLEO, and Bivy Stick all lean on the Iridium satellite constellation (with some competitors on other networks), a system of 66+ satellites in low Earth orbit specifically engineered to give truly global coverage, including the poles, open ocean, and everywhere in between. That's the headline advantage: there is effectively nowhere on Earth's surface these devices don't work, provided you have a reasonably clear view of the sky.

The tradeoffs that come with that coverage are the reason these remain dedicated, standalone gadgets rather than a feature baked into your phone:

- **Dedicated hardware.** These are separate devices with their own antennas, batteries, and built-in GPS chips, built to survive drops, water, and cold in a way a phone generally isn't.
- **Low bandwidth, high reliability.** Messaging is typically short-form (think SMS-length), with SOS/emergency escalation to a monitoring centre as a core feature — not an afterthought.
- **Subscription required, but flexible.** Plans range from pay-as-you-go to monthly or annual, generally billed separately from your cell plan.
- **Two-way, mature technology.** Iridium-based technology has been mature and field-proven for well over a decade, with monitoring centres, dispatch relationships, and emergency response protocols built out and tested at scale.

For anyone whose safety plan depends on being reachable *anywhere*, not just in populated latitudes, this remains the gold standard, and it's not going anywhere in the near term.

This is also, not coincidentally, the exact technology foundation Adiona Alert has built its own service on. Our platform relies on the same Iridium backbone that powers the inReach, ZOLEO, and Bivy devices our customers already trust. Global reach, proven emergency response infrastructure, and hardware designed to work when and where it matters most, rather than when conditions happen to be convenient for a consumer smartphone. That same reliable, low-latency Iridium link is also what makes possible one of the features Adiona Alert customers rely on most: consistently precise, frequent location updates that power ultra-precise, location-based alerting, the difference between knowing roughly where someone was last able to send a signal, and having an accurate, continuously updated picture of where they actually are.

## Direct-to-Cell — Your Phone as the Satellite Communicator

Direct-to-cell (also called satellite-to-cellular, or D2D, direct-to-device) works on a fundamentally different premise: instead of putting a specialized transceiver in your hand, put the "cell tower" in orbit and let an ordinary, unmodified phone connect to it the same way it connects to a terrestrial tower.

The way this works in practice:

- A constellation of satellites carries large phased-array antennas that essentially function as flying cell towers, transmitting on the same frequency bands your phone already uses.
- Your carrier, T-Mobile, Rogers, Optus, One NZ, and a growing list of others, licenses or shares spectrum with the satellite operator so the signal is recognized as "their" network. - When your phone loses terrestrial signal, it automatically hands over to the satellite network, generally showing something like "T-Mobile SpaceX" or "T-Sat" on screen.
- Coverage today is overwhelmingly text-first. Voice and data are being layered in gradually as satellite density, spectrum access, and regulatory approvals catch up, and current-generation direct-to-cell doesn't reach the poles or high latitudes the way Iridium's dedicated constellation does.

Rogers' own coverage map for Rogers Satellite makes this limitation visible at a glance: the service currently covers Canada south of the 58th parallel, in outdoor areas with a clear sky view, a huge improvement over zero coverage, but nowhere close to the pole-to-pole reach of the Iridium constellation. The pitch is obvious: zero extra hardware, generally cheap or bundled into your existing phone plan, and it turns the phone you're already carrying into an emergency backup. The catch is that "no extra hardware" doesn't mean "any phone."

## The State of the Sector in 2026

This space has gotten crowded fast, and it's worth knowing the players, because they're taking genuinely different strategic approaches.

**SpaceX / Starlink Direct-to-Cell** — the most advanced by a wide margin, both in satellites deployed and in commercial partnerships live around the world (T-Mobile in the US, Rogers in Canada, Optus and Telstra in Australia at various stages, One NZ and Spark in New Zealand, plus deals across Europe, Latin America, and Africa). Text messaging is commercial in multiple markets; voice and data are rolling out market by market. SpaceX's own evolving ambitions in this space, including a push to become its own wireless carrier, are significant enough that we've covered them separately.

**AST SpaceMobile** — the most direct technical rival, and arguably the most carrier-friendly model. Rather than owning spectrum outright, AST partners with existing mobile network operators and shares their spectrum, positioning itself as a wholesale add-on rather than a competitor to the carrier. Its BlueBird satellites are enormous. Arrays roughly the size of a tennis court, designed to deliver a fuller cellular experience (4G/5G, voice, data) sooner, using fewer, much bigger satellites rather than SpaceX's fleet of many smaller ones. AST already has commercial agreements with AT&T and Verizon in the US, and Bell and Telus in Canada.

**Amazon, Globalstar, and Apple** — increasingly one story rather than three. Amazon's broadband constellation, rebranded from Project Kuiper to Amazon Leo, has been scaling steadily but hadn't had a clear path into phone connectivity, until its roughly $11.6 billion deal to acquire Globalstar, announced in April 2026. That acquisition brings Globalstar's operational satellites and its licensed mobile satellite spectrum into the Amazon Leo fold, adding direct-to-device voice, text, and data capability to future satellites. It also matters for Apple: Globalstar has been the network quietly powering iPhone's emergency satellite SOS feature since the iPhone 14, and Apple has committed to continuing that partnership under Amazon's ownership. Full commercial phone service under this combined effort is still a 2027–2028 story, not a 2026 one.

**Lynk Global** — the smallest serious player, running limited text service in a handful of countries. It doesn't own spectrum and depends entirely on carrier partnerships, which has limited its scale compared to SpaceX and AST.

The upshot: this is not a two-horse race, and different carriers around the world are placing different bets, sometimes betting on both.

## The Hardware Reality — "No Special Phone" Isn't Quite True

This is where most consumer coverage glosses over an important detail. Direct-to-cell is marketed as requiring no extra hardware, and that's true in the sense that you don't need to buy a separate satellite terminal. But it is not true that *any* phone works.

To use direct-to-cell today, a phone needs:

- **A modem/baseband chipset that supports the relevant satellite frequency bands and protocols** — this is a hardware-level requirement baked in at manufacture, not something you can add later via software update on an older device.
- **Carrier and manufacturer software integration** — T-Mobile, for instance, has had to work phone-by-phone with Apple, Samsung, Google, and Motorola to certify devices, which is why compatibility lists have grown gradually rather than covering "every phone" from day one. As of mid-2026, roughly 60 phone models are certified for T-Satellite specifically, generally recent (last two to four years) flagship and mid-range models from Apple, Samsung, Google, and Motorola. Notably, most Motorola phones, OnePlus handsets, and pre-Pixel 8 Google phones are currently excluded, even though direct-to-cell in principle should work on standard LTE hardware. T-Mobile maintains a live list of supported devices at its [satellite phone service support page](https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/satellite-phone-service), worth checking directly since it updates as certification expands.
- **An unlocked device, in some cases, if you're on a different carrier** — customers on AT&T or Verizon, for example, need an unlocked phone and typically have to add an eSIM profile to access another carrier's satellite service.
- **A clear view of the sky.** Unlike Iridium devices, which are engineered to grab a satellite signal from awkward angles and terrain, phone antennas are not optimized for this and generally need a genuinely open sky to connect reliably.

Compatibility lists exist for every carrier running this service, and they're all worth checking directly rather than assuming any given phone qualifies. Rogers publishes a compatibility checker and current device list on its [Rogers Satellite support page](https://www.rogers.com/support/mobility/satellite-faq). In Australia, Telstra maintains its own eligible-device list on its [satellite messaging support page](https://www.telstra.com.au/support/mobiles-devices/satellite-to-mobile); Optus has signed a direct-to-cell deal with Starlink but, as of this writing, hasn't launched commercial service or a device list of its own. In New Zealand, both One NZ and Spark publish eligibility checkers: [One NZ's satellite FAQ](https://one.nz/faq/one-nz-satellite-frequently-asked-questions) and [Spark's satellite-ready device list](https://www.spark.co.nz/satellitetomobile#satellite-ready-devices), and both currently center on iPhone 13 and newer plus a growing list of recent Samsung and Google models.

There's also a real, if less obvious, cost worth flagging: the handoff between a marginal terrestrial signal and a satellite connection can be surprisingly taxing on a phone's battery. A phone hunting for signal, repeatedly searching, dropping, and reconnecting between a weak cell tower and an available satellite, draws meaningfully more power than either a stable terrestrial connection or a stable satellite one. In a genuine off-grid scenario, that's exactly the kind of drain you can least afford, and it's a factor worth weighing seriously against a dedicated device that doesn't have this problem at all.

In other words: today's direct-to-cell requires a specific, fairly recent phone, an eligible plan, favourable positioning, and, critically, is currently limited to short text messaging in most markets, with voice and data rolling out unevenly. It's a meaningfully different reliability profile than a purpose-built satellite communicator, even though the marketing language ("no extra hardware!") makes it sound like a straightforward substitute.

## The Takeaway — What a Purpose-Built Device Gets You That a Phone Can't

It's tempting to frame the case for a dedicated satellite communicator around where direct-to-cell doesn't reach yet, and that gap is real. But the stronger argument isn't really about coverage maps catching up over time. It's about what a purpose-built device is fundamentally built to do that a general-purpose phone, even a satellite-capable one, isn't.

It's worth spending a moment on why a dedicated safety tool outperforms a phone on the two things that matter most in an actual emergency: durability and battery life. A dedicated communicator is engineered from the ground up for the outdoors, rated for drops, submersion, dust, and temperature extremes that would take a consumer smartphone out of service in short order. And because these devices aren't also running a camera, apps, and a general-purpose OS, their batteries are built to sip power over days or weeks of standby, with GPS tracking and periodic check-ins layered on top, rather than the few hours to a day a phone's battery buys you even in low-power mode, and, as covered above, a phone hunting between marginal cell signal and satellite coverage burns through that battery even faster. In a true off-grid scenario, the device that's still alive and still transmitting on day four is the one that matters, and that's the case dedicated hardware is built to make.

That combination, always-on durability, long-duration battery life, and reliably precise, frequent location updates, is what a dedicated device paired with a service like Adiona Alert delivers, and it's a meaningfully different proposition than the device alone. The hardware provides the durability and the connection; our service turns that connection into something more than a reactive SOS button, a proactive safety radar, giving a continuous, accurate picture of where someone actually is throughout their trip, not just a single distress signal sent after something has already gone wrong. That shift, from "call for help after something goes wrong" to "receiving a notification when conditions pose a risk," is where purpose-built hardware plus our service genuinely pulls ahead of anything a phone can currently offer — direct-to-cell included.

None of this is to say direct-to-cell isn't valuable. It's a genuinely useful and rapidly improving safety net for the far larger population of casual outdoor users who'd otherwise have no backup at all. ## What the Reviewers Are Saying

We don't just take Garmin's word for it. We dug into the independent reviews, and the consensus is remarkably consistent. It also matches our own hands-on experience: a Mini 3 Plus is part of our internal satellite communicator fleet, and it holds up in day-to-day use just as well as the reviews suggest.

[DC Rainmaker](https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2025/12/garmin-inreach-mini-3-3-plus-in-depth-review-upgrade.html), one of the most technically rigorous voices in outdoor tech, put it bluntly: at the current price gap between the two devices, there's little reason to buy the base model. [Road Trail Run](https://www.roadtrailrun.com/2026/02/garmin-inreach-mini-3-plus-in-depth.html) reached a similar verdict, arguing the plain Mini 3 doesn't add enough over the older Mini 2 to justify its cost. Their advice is to either stick with the Mini 2 or step up to the Plus. [HikingGuy](https://hikingguy.com/hiking-gear/garmin-inreach-mini-3-plus-first-impressions/) summed it up well: the standard Mini 3 isn't a compelling upgrade for most hikers, but the Mini 3 Plus is. [5KRunner](https://the5krunner.com/2025/12/02/garmin-inreach-mini-3-review-buyer-guide-opinion/) frames it as a straightforward choice: pick the Plus if you want richer communication and more detailed SOS reporting.

Not every review is uncritical, and we think it's worth including that perspective too. [OutdoorGearLab](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/camping-and-hiking/personal-locator-beacon/garmin-inreach-mini-3-plus) flagged size and weight creep along with a touchscreen that could be more responsive, and pointed some buyers toward Garmin's Messenger Plus instead. Worth clarifying: that size and weight increase isn't unique to the Plus, it's a byproduct of the new touchscreen and chassis shared across the entire Mini 3 generation. The base Mini 3 jumped from the Mini 2's 112g up to 122g, and the Plus comes in at 139g mainly due to its larger antenna and included carabiner. So this is a tradeoff of the new Mini 3 platform as a whole, not something you take on specifically by choosing the Plus over the base model.

But even accounting for that dissent, the overwhelming reviewer consensus, and our own experience, points to the Plus as the stronger choice within the Mini 3 line.

## The Real Story Is the Radio, Not the Screen

It's easy to assume the Plus is just the base model with a better screen and a higher price tag. It isn't. The key difference, and the biggest reason the Plus stands out, is this: **the most important upgrade in the Mini 3 Plus is its radio, not its display.**

The base Mini 3 uses Iridium's older Short Burst Data (SBD) protocol, the same technology that powered the original Mini 2. The Mini 3 Plus switches to Iridium Certus, running on a newer IMT antenna module. Both devices communicate over the exact same Iridium satellite network and the same L-band frequency, so this isn't a question of better coverage or a different satellite system. It's a difference in how efficiently and reliably that connection gets made, and that difference is what actually matters for a safety device.

And it shows up in a number most buyers overlook: transmit power. The Mini 3 Plus transmits at nearly double the wattage of the base model, 4.68 watts versus 2.63 watts. In our own experience, that translates into a stronger, more reliable connection to satellites when a user is in a canyon, under heavy tree cover, or anywhere else the sky isn't wide open, and independent testing backs that up. Road Trail Run's field testing reached the same conclusion we did: the Plus's antenna locks onto satellites faster and holds the connection more consistently in exactly the conditions where a weak signal is most dangerous. It's reassuring to see our own findings echoed by an independent reviewer running their own trail tests.

For a safety device, that's not a nice-to-have. That's the whole point.

## No Real Battery Tradeoff

Given the power difference, you'd expect the Plus to burn through its battery faster. It doesn't. Garmin rates the Plus at up to 350 hours on a 10-minute tracking interval, matching or slightly beating the base Mini 3's roughly 336-hour rating. The Plus's more efficient chipset appears to offset its higher transmit power, so you're not sacrificing battery life for reliability.

## Performance Mode: A Genuine Life-Safety Advantage

This is one of the most significant benefits of the Plus, and one we think doesn't get enough attention. The Mini 3 Plus's Certus connection can run in **Performance mode**, which keeps a continuous, always-listening link open to the satellite network. The practical result: alerts and replies arrive almost instantly, rather than the few minute delay typical of an SBD-based device, or of the Plus running with Performance mode off.

In a fast-moving emergency, that speed difference is not a convenience. It can be the difference that matters. Think severe and rapidly changing weather, a medical event, or any situation where every minute of delay in getting a message through, or getting a response back, adds real risk. Near-instant delivery means a user (or the people responding to them) isn't left waiting and wondering whether a message actually went through.

Importantly, this doesn't come at the cost of usability: even with Performance mode available, the Plus still delivers excellent battery life (rated around 95 hours in Performance mode, and up to 350 hours in the standard Low Power mode, which checks for replies periodically rather than maintaining a constant link). Users get to choose the right mode for the moment, always-on responsiveness when it counts, or extended battery life for longer trips, without the base Mini 3's SBD hardware ever offering that near-instant option at all.

## You're Already Paying For Features You Can't Use

Here's the part we think gets overlooked most often: the subscription plans are identical in price whether you own a Mini 3 or a Mini 3 Plus. Every mid-tier and higher plan, Essential, Standard, Premium, includes a monthly allotment of photo and voice messages. But that allotment only works on Plus-enabled hardware. If you're on a base Mini 3, you're paying the exact same plan price while a chunk of what you're paying for sits completely unused.

Step up to the Plus, and that same subscription suddenly includes real capability: 30-second voice messages with automatic transcription, photo sharing, and message lengths up to 1,600 characters instead of 160. In an emergency, being able to send a photo of terrain or an injury, or simply speak instead of thumb-typing on a tiny screen, isn't a convenience. It can meaningfully change how fast and how well help understands your situation.

Beyond voice and photos, the Plus's Certus-based connection sends messages faster overall, and supports up to ten times the character count of the base model's 160-character limit. This week, the Meteorological Service of Canada is significantly changing how it issues Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, moving away from large, pre-defined county and municipal areas and toward storm-specific polygons that track a storm's actual, evolving footprint.

The Meteorological Service of Canada isn't the first to make this move. The National Weather Service in the U.S. has issued storm-based polygon warnings since 2007, and after two years of development, Canada's own version launches starting this week.

## What's Actually Changing

Starting as early as Tuesday, August 11th (with Wednesday and Thursday as backup dates if weather or technical issues intervene), forecasters will draw a free-form shape directly on a map, called a polygon, around the specific area a thunderstorm or tornado threatens. Instead of issuing a warning for an entire county or forecast region, the warning applies to that smaller, storm-specific shape.

A spokesperson for the Meteorological Service of Canada described it simply: forecasters will "outline the area most likely to be affected by a severe thunderstorm or tornado and send a warning only to people located in that area." Forecasters can extend the polygon downstream, out to wherever the storm is projected to track over the next 30 to 45 minutes, based on its speed and direction.

The change applies only to two alert types: Tornado Warnings and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued for destructive wind or very large hail. Every other alert type, including winter storm, rainfall, heat, and air quality alerts, will continue to use the existing zone-based system.

This precision only shows up, though, on delivery channels that can actually target a specific area. Wireless public alerts pushed to cell phones, and services like Adiona Alert that check your exact location against the warned area, will reflect the new, tighter polygon directly. Broadcast channels that can't pinpoint a specific location, television, radio, and many general-purpose weather apps, will continue distributing alerts based on the larger county or municipal areas they've always used, since there's no way to target a shape on the airwaves, or in an app that isn't checking your GPS position.

## Built for Storms That Don't Sit Still

One of the most valuable, and least talked about, parts of this upgrade is how the polygon behaves once a warning is already in effect. Severe storms are extremely dynamic: they grow, weaken, change direction, and speed up or slow down. A storm-based warning system is designed to track with that.

As a storm evolves, forecasters can update the polygon in near real time:

- **Areas can be added** to an active warning as a storm shifts or expands toward a community not originally included.
- **Alerts will be ended for areas the storm no longer affects**, as soon as forecasters confirm the threat has passed, rather than leaving an entire zone under warning long after the storm has actually left it.
- **The threat details themselves can be updated** within the same warning, including hail size, wind gusts, and whether tornadic development has been confirmed, so the information tied to your specific area stays current as the storm matures.

This is a meaningful departure from the old system, where a single warning covered a large, fixed zone for its entire duration regardless of how the storm inside it changed. Canada's implementation, developed under the Meteorological Service of Canada's Convective Alert Modernization (CAM) project, was specifically built to reduce this kind of over-alerting while keeping the warning's technical details tied to the storm's actual, evolving footprint, not the boundary it started with.

One of the most meaningful benefits of this approach is a real reduction in alert fatigue. Because the warned area is tied to the storm's actual footprint rather than a fixed zone, far fewer people receive a given warning in the first place. And because a single warning is updated and ended for specific areas as the storm moves, rather than closed out and reissued over and over, people near a storm's path get one alert that evolves with the threat, instead of a string of separate, overlapping warnings for the same event.

Fair warning: this next bit is for the small slice of readers who genuinely enjoy warning-dissemination methodology. If that's not you, jump ahead to "A Real Alert From One of Our Users, and What It Could Look Like Under the New System" below, that's honestly the best part of this article anyway, no hard feelings.

Still here? Good, because the way Canada and the U.S. handle a *moving* polygon isn't actually the same, and the difference says something about where this technology is headed.

**The U.S. approach today:** under current NWS practice, a storm-based warning polygon can shrink as forecasters refine the threat area, but it's not stretched to cover new ground. If a storm tracks outside its original shape, the NWS issues a brand-new warning for the newly threatened area rather than expanding the existing one.

**Canada's approach with CAM:** the new system updates one active warning as a storm moves, rather than closing a warning and issuing a new one every time the storm shifts. Newly threatened communities are added into the existing warning, and communities the storm has cleared are removed from it, or have their alert ended, well before the wider warning's stated expiry time. It's a subtly different philosophy from the current U.S. approach: one evolving alert that follows the storm, rather than a sequence of fresh, overlapping ones, and it's the design work directly behind the alert fatigue reduction mentioned above.

**Where the science is heading next:** NWS researchers have already proposed a further step past both approaches, called Threats-in-Motion (TIM), where the warning polygon is attached directly to the storm and advances with it continuously, rather than being redrawn by a forecaster at intervals. It's still a research concept, not something in operational use, but it's a useful reminder that this week's launch is an early step on a longer road, not the finish line.

## A Real Alert Sent to One of Our Users, and What It Could Look Like Under the New System

All of this is easier to see in a real example than in the abstract, so here's one.

On the evening of August 10th, 2026, the day before the new system's planned launch, the Meteorological Service of Canada issued a genuine Severe Thunderstorm Warning to one of Adiona Alert's own users deep in Algonquin Provincial Park.

At 5:47 p.m. EDT, forecasters were tracking a severe thunderstorm near Kiosk, moving quickly east at 65 km/h, capable of strong wind gusts up to 90 km/h, hail near quarter size (about 2.5 cm), and heavy rain of 15 to 25 mm. The alert named Algonquin Provincial Park, Lake Travers, and Grand Lake as locations in the storm's path.

Because the new polygon-based system hadn't launched yet, this alert went out the old way, to two large, pre-defined zones, "Deep River – Whitney – Eastern Algonquin Park" and "Western Algonquin Park – Lake of Two Rivers", covering a combined area of roughly 10,300 km², close to the size of the entire country of Lebanon.

Adiona Alert received this warning from the Meteorological Service of Canada and delivered it directly to our user's Garmin inReach Mini the moment their GPS position registered inside the warned zone, exactly the way our service is designed to work. Their alert was correct, since they genuinely were close to where the storm was tracking. But that same warning would have reached every other Adiona Alert user anywhere inside that 10,300 km² area, including someone who might have been paddling in the far southeast corner of eastern Algonquin, more than 100 km from Kiosk and nowhere near this storm's actual path.

### What a Storm-Based Polygon Might Have Looked Like (Hypothetical)

To make the difference concrete, we built a hypothetical storm-based polygon using this storm's own real, published parameters, its location near Kiosk, its 65 km/h eastward motion, and its hazard profile. To be clear: this is not a product the Meteorological Service of Canada actually issued that night, the storm-based system wasn't live yet, and no forecaster drew this specific shape. It's our own illustration of what a forecaster would plausibly draw under the new methodology for a storm moving this fast.

The result: a simulated warned area of about 3,189 km², roughly 69% smaller than the real, zone-based alert that was actually issued that evening.

Overlaying the two makes the gap even clearer. Nearly all of our simulated storm-based polygon, about 99%, sits inside the real zone-based warning area, which makes sense, since the storm genuinely was somewhere in that broader region. But the simulated polygon covers only about 30% of the total zone-based footprint. The remaining 70%, more than 7,100 km² of Algonquin backcountry, would likely never have been warned at all for this particular storm under a real storm-based system.

For our user near Kiosk, nothing would have changed: they were in the right place to receive this specific alert either way. But for the roughly seven in ten square kilometres of warned wilderness the storm never actually threatened, a live storm-based system means fewer unnecessary alerts, without costing a moment of warning time for the people who are genuinely at risk. That's precision working exactly as intended, not in the abstract, but for a specific storm, on a specific evening, for a specific person carrying a satellite communicator through the backcountry.

## What Polygons Don't Fix

It's worth being upfront about the limits of this change too. A smaller, more precise warning area is not the same thing as more precise tornado detection. Detecting rotation within a storm remains genuinely difficult, and severe thunderstorms will continue to be warned even when only a small fraction go on to produce a tornado, since waiting for visual or radar confirmation takes precious time that forecasters often can't spare.

And if the storm moves past your location, the forecaster will issue an alert end for your specific area, so you'll know the threat has passed rather than being left to guess whether you're still at risk somewhere inside a much larger warned zone.

Like many Canadians, we were surprised to learn this week that Environment and Climate Change Canada intends to discontinue their Weatheradio service, beginning March 16th, as part of the federal government’s Comprehensive Expenditure Review.

### The End of Weatheradio in Canada

The Weatheradio transmitter network has been an important means of receiving severe weather alerts issued by the Meteorological Service of Canada, particularly in remote communities and wilderness areas. The service wasn't a solution for everyone and had significant limitations, but for those who relied on it, its loss will be felt.

We've reached out to our colleagues at the Meteorological Service of Canada for more details on how the network will be closed — whether all at once in March or decommissioned over time. We'll share what we learn as soon as we can.

### Tsunami Warning Reaches the Middle of the Pacific Ocean

On July 29, 2025, a massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck offshore of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, generating a significant tsunami that threatened multiple Pacific regions across the U.S. and Canada, including Hawaii.

But this wasn't just any location in Hawaii. Our test took place on Hōlanikū (the Kure Atoll), the northwestern most coral atoll in the Hawaiian island chain, located approximately 2,250 kilometres (1,400 miles) northwest of Honolulu. To put this in perspective, that's roughly the same distance as traveling from New York City to Denver, Colorado.

#### Why This Location Matters

The Kure Atoll faces unique tsunami risks. The atoll's highest point reaches only 7.3 meters (approximately 24 feet) above sea level on Green Island, the only stable landmass where researchers live year-round protecting Hawaii's most significant seabird sanctuary. This sanctuary hosts 18 seabird species with over 100,000 nesting birds.

When the National Weather Service National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, issued tsunami advisories and warnings across the Pacific—from the Aleutian Islands to the Pacific Coast and Hawaii, Hōlanikū was included despite being literally in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

#### The result? 

Thanks to well-practiced emergency protocols and reliable alert delivery, the research team received critical warnings, sought shelter, and remained safe and informed throughout the entire warning period.

### Wilderness Emergency Alert Test in Yellowstone

Our second test brought us closer to the continental U.S., but no less remote.

Yellowstone National Park, America's first national park (established 1872), spans 2.2 million acres across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Sitting atop the Yellowstone Caldera volcanic system, the park features dramatic landscapes and supports over 60 mammal species, including one of North America's largest free-roaming bison herds.

On Friday, September 12th, Teton County Emergency Management (TCEM) conducted their first-ever live Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) test. We saw this as the perfect opportunity to test our capabilities in Yellowstone's Shoshone Lake and Shoshone Geyser Basin area, deep in the wilderness and far beyond cellular phone coverage.

## Ultra-Precise, Location-Based Alerts

Adiona Alert tracks your current location through the GPS data reported by the Garmin inReach, ZOLEO, or Bivy Stick satellite communicator that you already carry. Because we access your precise longitude and latitude, we can send you alerts based on your exact position. Whether an alert is for your current location or was issued earlier, our service will promptly send you the relevant information when you are in the affected area.

Unlike other apps or services, we do not rely on broad areas like county boundaries when the alerting agency has specified a particular, defined zone. I will discuss this further shortly, but as a result, you will not receive an alert just because you are in a general area or county, even if you are out of danger, and instead, you will only get an alert when you are within the carefully determined zone as set by the alerting agency.

## Area or County-Based Alerts
 
Many weather alerting apps and services issue alerts based on the county or area you are in, even if the app monitors your location. As a result, when you receive an alert, you lack clarity about whether the tornado, flash flood, or other severe weather genuinely poses a risk to you.

Here are two examples based on recent flash flood alerts issued by the U.S. National Weather Service, which we delivered to our users in Arizona.

The first, a flash flood warning, was issued on September 4, 2025, for Coconino County, Arizona, due to heavy rain and debris flow risk, including the Grand Canyon National Park and nearby areas.

As shown in the image above, the alert was issued for a specific and limited area within Coconino County, marked by the blue-shaded region. When the NWS issued the warning, it evaluated only this particular area as being affected by the risk from heavy rains and debris flow. However, it also extended this alert to the entire Coconino County, shown by the green-shaded area on the map, for the purpose of disseminating the alert through channels like weather radio receivers, TV and radio emergency alert system notifications, and other alerting services. As a result, some individuals may have received this alert across a much larger area than the actual risk zone.

Compared to the entire county, which is 18,661 square miles (48,330 km²) and the second largest county in the continental United States, we only send alerts to users when their last reported location is in or near the affected area or blue shaded area, which is approximately 71 square miles (183 km²). **The at-risk or blue shaded area accounts for less than 0.4% of the total warned region**.

Let’s examine another flash flood warning issued the next day, on September 5th, 2025, this time for southwestern Mohave County in Arizona and northeastern San Bernardino County in California. Similar to the first alert, the NWS assessed the risk as “life-threatening flash flooding of low-water crossings, creeks, normally dry washes and roads” and outlined a specific area, marked with blue shading on the map. To aid public understanding, NWS meteorologists included a description of the impacted area in the alert, noting “Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Lake Havasu City, Parker Dam, Topock, Highway 95 At Mile Marker 29, Wikieup, Needles, Desert Hills, Three Dunes Campground, Cattail Cove State Park, Black Meadow Landing Campground, Earp, Big River, Arizona Village, Mohave Valley, Vidal Junction and Wild Cow Campground. This includes the following highways... Interstate 40 in Arizona between mile markers 0 and 1. Interstate 40 in California between mile markers 139 and 155.” To their credit, this description would have been helpful to individuals receiving the alert via weather radio, as it provided clear points of reference.

However, the alerted area was the counties of Mohave County and San Bernardino County (the green shaded area on the map), covering a total of 33,566 square miles (86,930 km²), which is larger than the state of Maine. In contrast, the actual defined at-risk area (the blue shaded area on the map) was only 3,164 square miles (8,193 km²), **less than 10% of the total county-based warning area**.

## NOAA Weather Radio and Canadian Weatheradio

Let me begin this section by highlighting the excellent services that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio Service and the Meteorological Service of Canada's Weatheradio deliver, which have been provided since the 1960s. These services are essential and offer life-saving information for communities across the U.S. and Canada. This network of more than 1000 radio transmitters supplies over 95% of the U.S. population (nearly 200 radio transmitters serving more than 90% of the population in Canada) with current weather conditions, weather forecasts, and severe weather alerts.

> The broadcast range for a NOAA Weather Radio or Canadian Weatheradio transmitter is about 40 miles (60 kilometres), but this largely depends on factors like terrain, receiver quality, and antenna height above ground.

Weather radio receivers are also easily accessible; you might already own one as part of a two-way radio, such as FRS/GMRS or marine radio. Some of these radios and specialized weather receivers can even emit a loud tone during a severe weather alert. The most advanced dedicated weather radios can be programmed to notify users only when an alert is issued for their area, using Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) codes, which mostly align with county boundaries. Dedicated weather radios using SAME codes provide a reliable way to receive alerts for a designated area, like a county. However, they cannot deliver alerts specific only to at-risk zones such as those for flash floods, severe thunderstorms, or tornado warnings. 

Now imagine this difference for alerts issued for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, based on a county-based area versus the specific, observed path of the storm system, as illustrated in the first radar-alert image at the top of this article.
